Peek into the Past…..1974 Okinawa

I usually don’t post about anything too personal, but today is something a little different… our 32nd anniversary. Sometimes I think we amaze ourselves more than anything else. Maybe thirty-two years of marriage isn’t that big of a deal, but given that we had only seen each other but a few times prior to the first date, were engaged six weeks later, and married about six weeks after that….were both under the age of twenty-five, from different races, different cultures, and different countries….. well, surviving all those tumultuous ups and downs feels like something worth a mention….

1st Date

Photo of our first date in June 1974 taken at Liebe…. now known as Hard Rock Cafe Okinawa on B.C. Street (Chuo Park Avenue) in Koza (Okinawa City).

  1. I love your photos. My father was stationed on Okinawa in the early 70’s when I was in middle school. We stayed long enough for me to attend Pacific Middle and to finish my freshman year at Kubasaki. Somehow it was the most exciting place I could ever imagine and maybe it still is. I stumbled into JWebb’s photos a couple of days ago and don’t even know how, but here I am in your photos! I adore your first date photo! I have been wallowing in memories for two days and go back to look over and over. I’m marveling that someone was able to capture so much of everyday life then with seemingly inconsequential photos, but ones that mean so much to me now even though they aren’t of my family. It was an adolescent dream when I left to be able to live on Okinawa and you’ve done it! Congratulations on your anniversary and marriage and your good fortune!

  2. Thank you. If you look at the crusin’ videos you will see that the island, not unlike the rest of the world, is slightly different than our past memories have it. And as with most the world, change was inevitable. But, yes those were fun days to be living on the island in all its and our simplicity.
