Every Way the Wind Blows

If you have been keeping up with recent comments, Brad and I have been discussing some of the situations that occur in the service industry. It seems no matter where you are in the world, this is an ongoing issue. From grocery stores to restaurants, there is a major communication gap in personal beliefs as to what is acceptable behavior in those who are customers towards persons and businesses suppling the product!

  1. As I do more and more research on the topic of the gap between persons showing some degree of reasonability (or lack thereof) in our service driven world, I have come across some excellent sites that I have decided to provide links to in the sidebar. Check them out when you get a chance! Who knows maybe someone will gain some insight.

  2. Hey Brad, I haven’t had the chance to delve into the various branches of the service industry yet, but I’m sure there are others in your industry that must feel the same way. I think some of what you are dealing with that isn’t applicable at the bar level is bikes are more than something that temporarily satifies one’s immediate needs. Bikes are investments, but more important than that they are an extension of the rider, almost a child per se. There is much more of an emotional investment in a bike. For the owner a bike would be closer to an original song than a drink or snack. I think this sense of something being an extension of someone could also be said of a meal to a chef and an original alcholic beverage to a bartender.

  3. Brad, let me ask you this. When a customer comes in for a part or whatever change to a bike they want, how do they communicate their need to you? Is there a drawing, just verbally, another person’s bike as an example, how? The thing is very seldom does the way one person envisions a creation and the manner in which another person who performs the task come out in an exacting manner. Take when I write lyrics to a song for instance. Taki has one thing in mind when he creates the song; I supply several choices for the words; he chooses the lyrics that are closest to his vision; then it goes to the rest of the band and they add their vision through their instruments. We all have a somewhat different vision, but the total product is a collaboration of those visions. The problem seems to occur when one individual in a group project is inflexible. The only way a vision will ever come out the exact way one person envisions it is for that person to do all the work their self.

Of course, there’s always the other side of the situation. When people think something is a group project when in actuality they have nothing to do with it (other than criticize that is)!!! But that’s another topic in itself.

  4. WOw Long reply I need to do here HEHE.Well Dawn and Taki.If it,s a mojor mod above what the factory did.It really becomes personal.AT times I cut a Mold (If you,ll call it that) out of cardboard then see if the customer likes it.But basically verbal is the choice some customers want more power in the mid RPM range some want it low.I offer several different routes to get there (All money dependant)Then I,ll perform that.I also re program the bikes CPU for new bikes. Many time I end of reprogramming it because the map that I installed does,nt fit there driving style Or at times they do not like the way the Pipe sounds at certain RPM,s So I reprogram to accomodate them.It is difficult needless to say.My biggest challange is waht kind of tires Many customers only knwo what they read.I have rode all the Major Brands so I relate that to them. The other variable is when you switch brands sometimes Suspension needs to be readjusted.New bikes and tires are very finicky!!.I hope this explains it some what.!!BTW Appin told me he wants a bike!!! COOL HA?
